Toward a Better Understanding of Blogging (See: The gifs have landed)

Okay, so I have to be honest here. I'm one of those people who bought a diary every year as a kid and wrote in it a grand total of ten times. I'd start every year like "YEAH, EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT ME" By about April, every entry would start with something like "Sorry I haven't written in awhile," until I eventually just gave up and committed to trying again next year. (#thestruggle) Even then, I felt like talking about the struggles of being 7-8-9-10-11 was boring, but half-fictionalizing my life to make me sound like the plucky heroine in a Wes Anderson film wasn't much better.

I figured that writing had to have a purpose, that what I was saying didn't matter unless it was working toward some larger goal. And even though I know that's not true, and that writing just to write can be one of the most therapeutic and helpful skills a person can have, that feeling still persists sometimes. It's so pervasive that I compiled a list of things this blog had to be about in trying to make it for all of you.

REJECTED LIST OF BLOG SUBJECTS
  • Teaching Blog (boring, and way too easy to try and turn myself into Hillary Swank in a terrible dramatic movie (or worse))
  • Fitness Journey Blog (WAY too personal, WAY too given to telling people stories about CrossFit that nobody wants to hear)
  • Planning a Wedding as a Broke Feminist (You know, because the only thing people like to hear more than wedding planning stuff is GUILT about wedding planning stuff)
  • Weird Poems I Wrote about Superheroes and Horror Film Monsters
  • Dexter Rewatch Journey Diary (Too many feels)
  • Dad Jokes I Heard at Target (This one was the most promising, but still not quite right)
In the end, it seemed most genuine to show up to this project and be honest. That's all I'm asking of myself, and it's all I'll ever ask of you. If you want to turn this space into a place to post pictures of your dog, or to weigh in on Twitter beefs, I hope you will, as long as you're honest about it. This is a safe place. We got this.

Probably.
